Survey Results: Mood of Junior High School Students in Tokyo Under State of Emergency Declaration—Summer Break Period

Survey of Junior High School Students’ Moods in Tokyo Under State of Emergency Declaration—Summer Break Period

ConCare Inc. (headquarters: Tokyo, President and CEO: Yu Ishida) and Tokyo Mental Health Inc. (headquarters: Tokyo, President and CEO: Seiei Muto) conducted a mood survey using simple weather icons targeting junior high school students in Tokyo under the state of emergency declaration. Following reports and surveys indicating an increase in fatal incidents and school non-attendance after summer vacation, we implemented the survey on three fixed dates: during summer break (August 10), the last day of summer break (August 31), and one week after the end of summer break (September 7). The main results are as follows.

[Survey Results Highlights]

・On the last day of summer break (August 31), the number of junior high school students selecting a weather icon indicating the worst mood doubled. When comparing mean values after converting weather icons to numerical data, the last day of summer break also showed the worst mood trend. However, when analyzing whether there were differences among the survey periods from a statistical perspective, no statistically significant difference was found.

・On the other hand, as the school reopening approached, approximately 25% of students showed improvement in their emotional state, while approximately 25% showed deterioration. We believe this suggests a polarization: between students with positive expectations for the return to school and those with anxiety about it.

・These survey results make it difficult to draw strong conclusions. In particular, we assume that this year, due to the impact of the state of emergency declaration caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, how junior high school students spent their summer break and their expectations and anxieties about returning to school are likely significantly different from previous years. Going forward, we plan to continue similar surveys to compare trends over time, and conduct more detailed questionnaire surveys to better understand the actual situation of these seemingly polarized students.
